A Peso for Your Thoughts, No Lime Required

Cerveza Peso

Blackburn Beer Co.

4.5% Alcohol

Some have said that timing is everything, other say timing is the only thing. *  The debate rages on, but most would agree that timing is something. When it comes to us cranky old men we say anytime is beer time and that summertime is Mexican lager time. Maize in the mix, lime optional. **

Blackburn tend to agree with us and their Mexican Lager Cerveza Peso is back, just in time for summer. Although most of us know “peso” is a form of currency, my Spanglish *** isn’t up to Adam Sandler’s standards so I called in the COMDB translation department on this one. “Cerveza Peso” literally means “beer weight”. Well as far as I’m concerned, the wait is over and not a moment too soon. Time to pop the top and see if this South of the border brewski is a-maizing or a corn dog.

A golden semi-clear pour, not as pale as some lime in the bottle brews. A bit bubbly too, the bubbles feeding the frothy head. An aroma of mild malt with some background corn. The first taste is a light, watery mouthfeel with that same mild malt and a kernel or two of corn, first impression is a light beer. It has a slightly flat dry aftertaste with a touch of fizz. It is easy drinking but with flavour. The malt started to step up a bit, giving it a fuller flavour (no longer light) but still easy going. The maize noticeable but in the background, just where it should be. Light and refreshing, limeless and loving it.

The weight is over, and this Peso is money in the bank.

*Editor’s Comment: In the 1599 play Julius Ceaser, Shakespeare uses the expression “timing is everything”. Although Shakespeare didn’t coin the phrase, he certainly popularized it. Vince Lombardi said “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing” and it seems that “timing isn’t everything, it’s the only thing” is a variation not attributed to any one person.

**Editor’s Comment: Mexican lagers typically include corn (often in the form of flaked maize) in the brewing process which tends to make for a lighter/pale lager.

***Editor’s Comment: Adam Sandler’s 2004 movie Spanglish was a box office loser but Sandler’s performance in the dramatic lead role was well received. The star of the movie was Paz Vega who stole the show.
