A Pint of Pleasure for the Body and Soul

Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel

Kloster Andechs

7.1% Alcohol

The COMDB translation department loves German, or as they like to say “Wir lieben Deutsch”.  They tells us that “Kloster” means monastery, and Andechs slogan “Genuβ für Leib & Seele” translates to “Pleasure for the body and soul”. Can this dark double bock live up to such lofty claims from on high? A quaffing is in the offing.

A copper coloured clear craft pour with a tinge of ruby red below an off white head. How’s that for a colourful description! It has a creamy malty aroma with a touch of caramel. A creamy mouthfeel, with a complex malty copper caramel sweet taste to it. Complex but it doesn’t come on strong, it’s a smooth finisher. Great balance not at all aggressive for a doppelbock, the creaminess smooths it all out, and the touch of caramel sweet is a nice touch.

A pint of pure pleasure for sure.

Hamlet famously told Ophelia, “Get thee to a nunnery”. ** But perhaps if he’d tried this tasty brew from Kloster Andechs he would have said “Get thee to a monastery and pick me up a six pack of Doppelbock Dunkel.” Ok, maybe not as poetic as the Bard’s version but apropos for this review. Great beer, I think that Shakespeare, and his cranky old man, would have both approved. ***

*Editor’s Comment: Kloster Andechs has a history as rich as its Doppelbock Dunkel. The Andechs beginning can be traced back to the 10th century. The monastery brewery itself was founded in 1455. It remains to this day an independent Monastery brewery.

**Editor’s Comment: Hamlet’s comments to Ophelia had a double meaning. A nunnery in literal terms would mean to lead a chaste life and was the obvious first meaning. However a nunnery was also an Elizabethan slang term for a brothel, where chastity was definitely not an option.

***Editor’s Comment: Shakespeare drank beer on a regular basis and owned an alehouse in his hometown, The Swan & Maidenhead. He was likely introduced to it early in life since his Father, John Shakespeare, was an official ale taster.
