Back in the day my grandfather’s porch was a big wrap around with an overhanging eave and a thick white balustrade. Rockers for relaxing and end tables for iced tea and lemonade, maybe a fresh baked cookie or two. Maples in the front yard, tire swing hanging,* the trees tapped and sapped for syrup in the fall. A friendly wave and a cheery “hello how are you” greets the neighbours walking their dog down the quiet laneway.
Fast forward to today, and our abbreviated front porch looks like an Amazon depot, with frequent visits from FedEx, UPS and assorted no name transport services. Daily deliveries piled high, reminiscent of Christmas day under the tree. Security cameras to try and thwart the porch pirates who stroll down the sidewalk casing the joint like Pesci and Stern in Home Alone.
That being said, this Calabogie craft quaff takes me back for a bit from the now to the then. A welcome respite to be sure. A clear deep golden pour with a touch of froth. A malt crisp aroma with a touch of appley fruit aroma. The first taste is malty and quite fizzy with a suggestion of fruit in there and a very dry pucker up buttercup finish. As dry as me after mid-summer yard work! So dry it’s verging on bitter but not quite there. The carbonation subsided but never left the porch. A tasty Kolsch with a crisp dry finish.
