Episode deux from the CIM Convention in Montreal. I remember back in the day when these conventions were all about drinking triples, seeing double and acting single. Now for me it’s one and done. Not so for my Crownsmen partners Jerrod and Rory.

Professionals at Work

After a full day in front of the camera and under the 3000 Watt stage lights grilling their guest (figuratively and literally) into revealing their most personal secrets Geraldo style*, they decided to start the tap portion of wrap and tap early. They were palette cleansing mode with a brew or two before the show. Fair enough, the team did so many reviews that day Rory couldn’t recall them all, although that could have been the early brew or two obstructing the view. By the way, we have come to terms with Rory’s innumeracy**, he had his game face on and was up to the task today.

Today’s review has us travelling north of Quebec City to Archibald Brewing. Their Angelique IPL had received praise on high from JT, an angel he called it, so I was encouraged to seek out their other brews. Chipie is one of their mainstays. A Rousse Pale Ale sounds like a Red to me but the COMDB translation department were quick to correct me, making me feel at home. Rousse means not just red, but redhead, which seems like an apt moniker for a “scrappie” brew. Although I didn’t ask, they went on to translate Chipie for me, which they say means “bitch” in English, which literally makes this tasting a bitch session.

Better do a beer review. A nice red copper pour, amberesque in it’s presentation, with a slim white head on this red head. A nice malt caramel aroma, no hops noted or accounted for on the nose. First taste yields a close to amber flavour, mild malt with a caramel and very slight bitter finish. After an intense wrap and tap series of Oprah inspired questions from Jerrod I did confess that I love me an amber.*** This pale ale is close to an amber flavour with a bit of hoppy bitterness on the finish. Well balanced, great combination and a nice mouthfeel. A very tasty red pale ale.

*Editor’s Comment: Geraldo Rivera is a controversial talk show host and “Dancing with the Stars” contestant (he was eliminated in the first round).

**Editor’s Comment: The sad part is that innumerate people just don’t count.

***Editor’s Comment: You have “confessed” to loving an amber about 1,000 times on this website to date.
