Cream Ale takes me back to my youth. Not that I drank beer as a youngster – but I can distinctly remember watching Saturday morning cartoons on an American TV channel from Syracuse or possibly Rochester and seeing ads for Genesse Cream Ale. I’m not sure they got the whole “target market” thing in those days – or maybe they were cunningly planting the seeds for future beer drinking customers? In any case, I can recall being vaguely mystified by what exactly “Genesee cream” was. It was clear you drank it and the people on TV really liked it – but whether it was beer or a dairy product wasn’t really clear. It turns out Genesee cream ale is still being produced. The Genesee Brewing company introduced it in 1960. Likely one of the first Cream Ales.
This latest brew I tried was a delicious and faithful incarnation of the style. Made by Power House Brewery in London, Ontario, this Ale has the crispness and cool, smooth taste that is the hallmark of a good cream ale. This will be one I will turn to in the summer for sure, when I’m looking for a refreshing brew, but not looking for a flavour explosion. The can has Christmas wrapping and lights on it as well – which made it a great, no-need-to-wrap Christmas gift.
I’ll be hitting up my brother from another mother, Jamie who’s in London for a delivery of some more of these thirst quenchers in the spring.
