A Study in Risk Reward

Beerdevil

NIagara Brewing Co.

6.5% Alcohol

If my cat can survive the falls, I sure as hell can.

A high risk low reward barrel ride over Niagara Falls could be considered a daredevil deed or a suicide ride, most likely the latter as opposed to the former. Some say the devil is in the details. One detail to consider before planning to go over the falls is that your devil may care attitude will most likely result in your death.  If by the grace of God you are in the less than 1% survivor rate for such a foolhardy feat you will then have to pay the devil his due, to the tune of a $25,000 fine. *

I would have to say that Niagara Brewing has taken a risk with this brew, a Dr. Beer-in-stein creation cross-species combination of an amber and an IPA. The devil you say! Lord knows I love me an amber, and at times am fond of a well-done IPA as well. But Ambers and IPAs are like chalk and cheese, oil and water, or Ambers and Johnnys.  ** Time to hop in this caramel barrel and brace for impact.

An amberesque pour, a devilish tinge of red below the bright white head. A very clear pour, no haze or mist. No aroma? Either my sniffer is on a work to rule campaign (for what I don’t know) or the amber caramel is cancelling out the IPA fruit and hops. A watery mouthfeel, an Irish red combined with some hops that at first seems like it has gone flat. A somewhat off putting combination upon first quaff. The caramel amber seems to be neutralizing the hops so the high IBU just isn’t registering. This is not your son’s, or grandson’s IPA.

It took some getting use to, as in half the glass, at which point I employed a glass half full philosophy and recognized this brew for what it was and started to enjoy it. I’m not sure if the risk was worth the reward, but the light watery mouthfeel and minimal bitters did make for an easy drinking IPA.

*Editor’s Comment: The first recorded survivor of a ride over Niagara falls was a school teacher, Annie Taylor who in 1901 went over in a specially designed oak barrel after sending her cat over to test the barrel (the cat survived). Of the thousands of people that have attempted since there have only been 16 recorded survivors. In 1951 the stunt was made illegal and punishable by fines up to $25,000, to be paid posthumously in most cases we would assume.

**Editor’s Comment: Heard and Depp married in 2015 and divorced in 2016 and reached a settlement at that time. In response to a 2018 Op-Ed Heard published in the Washington Post about their relationship, in 2022 Depp filed a $50M defamation sit against Heard, who countered with a $100M counterclaim. It seems like Depp won the overall case with the court awarding various compensation to both parties. In the end it was settled with a rumoured payment of $1M from Heard to Depp.
