It’s the COMDB Christmas countdown and the good shepherds are watching their flocks by night, chilly and all quite star struck I might add. The bad shepherds can be found downtown at the Bethlehem’s Manger Ranger Bar and Grill, cozy by the fire and quaffing a cold one, which doesn’t sound too bad to me. If they’re lucky there might just be a Double Choc on tap, a fancy pants brown from down under, and not coincidentally what’s going down tonight.

Bud the Elf on the Beer Shelf can’t resist chocolate.
The Elf on the Beer Shelf is back and we all know Bud’s penchant for chocolate, so he couldn’t resist selecting this Double Choc Hazelnut Brown from Bad Shepherd Brewery out of Cheltenham, Australia. You know, Cheltenham, it’s just down the road from Dandenong, and across the bay from Geelong, you know, right there. *
I enjoy a chocolate stout on occasion but I must admit, I’m not a hazelnut nut. But Bud has a pretty good track record so I’m full of hope and hopefully soon full of good cheer as well.
A deep dark down under brown to black pour with a frosty froth topside. An aroma of a creamy cocoa booze fest, just what Bud lives for. The taste follows suit, a double double cocoa cocoa plus on the palate, creamy but not boozy, quite tasty. The hazelnut is barely there which is A-OK by me. I think the nut adds to the creaminess. This is definitely a chocolate lover’s beer. As progress is made the hazelnut starts to come through, not nutty buddy but subtle nut.
Mid size swigs recommend, big swigs may result in a cocoa OD. There might be a bit of nutty brown in there, but the cocoa is loco, smooth and delicious. Unbalanced like our editor, but in a good way, unlike our Editor. **
If you’re a chocolate lover you will really love this beer, if you’re a chocolate liker you will really like this beer. Bad Shepherd, very good beer.***
