Calgary, home of big rigs and big hats and big rodeos and of course Big Rock Brewery and their Plzen Pilsner. Many years ago I tried a Big Rock Honey Brown Amber which may have been the start of my love affair with Amber. You always remember your first.  So how does this Big Rock Czech Style Pilsner measure up?

I think it is telling that they have simply named it Pilsner, because they have brewed a classic Czech style, the original Plzen pilsner*, first brewed long before Farmer Steve was even playing with Tonka tractors.

Grain malt in the aroma with the Saaz hops. No hoppiness or fruit on board. The first swig was malt and with a good level of carbonation.  A malt flavour without any graininess but with some bitter on the finish. Did I detect a touch of sweet on the finish as it warmed a bit? Perhaps.

A nice traditional refreshing pilsner, malt with some fizz from the hops but no real hoppiness or zing. Big Rock takes us back to basics on this brew, with good results.

*Editor’s Comment: Pilsner is a fairly modern beer style. The word Pilsner means “from Plzen” a town that is now part of the Czech Republic. The first brand was brewed in 1842 by Josef Groll. Groll’s beer was eventually renamed Pilsner Urquell which means “ original source of the Pilsner”.
