A vacation voucher sure sounds nice, but if you must know, the life of a beer reviewer is a vocation without vacation. Last night’s brew, today’s review. This job requires dedication and the type of commitment to a higher purpose that few ever get a chance to make their life’s work. If it was an easy job anyone could do it.*
But Katalyst has given me a vacation voucher for a trip to Mexico** with their Mexican lager. For this tasting I put James Taylor’s song “Mexico” on (Moon’s so bright like to light up the night, Make everything alright) to set the mood. Perhaps I should have put on Sammy Hagar’s song “Mas Tequila” instead (Three shots, Ariba! Mas Tequila!)?
No scurvy symptoms so no lime required. Nice slightly dark golden pour with a bright white sombrero. Some haze, as in particles, or as Sherlock would say “Sedimentary, my Dear Watson”***. A malt bread aroma with a touch of grain, perhaps the maize? A nice mild malt flavour with a crisp refreshing finish. The hops and bitters forgot their passport so couldn’t make the trip south of the Rio Grande. The flavour and crisp finish stayed the course, resulting in a nice refreshing lager.
