I put the term Weissbräu to the COMDB translation department and they promptly told me that Oktoberfest was over. After some cajoling, and explaining this was definitely not an Oktoberfest beer, I got them to assist. Although it is generally recognized  that a Weissbräu is a wheat beer (says so on the label of the bottle) the direct translation is “white brew”. White brew, wheat beer, no matter. Wheat beers have not been a favourite* around here at COMDB, no one would call us Weiss men.

So the question arises, if we don’t really like wheat beers, is this a fair review. Let me tell you something about fair. The only real fair is the one that Clark the Pig goes to at the September County shindig before he comes home as bacon. How’s that for fair. Breakfast fare I guess. Once you stop sniveling about life not being fair and start to put your nose to the grindstone and get to work to make your own luck, that’s when things will start to seem a little more fair.  Like old William Goldman said “Life isn’t fair, it’s just fairer than death, that’s all.”  Of course, Goldman is dead now, how’s that for fair. Now I’m in the right mood for a wheat beer review, fair enough.

This ERDINGER brew pours a darker orangy golden than a Belgian wheat, with a weiss brow that cropped quickly into a slim, trim and prim head. It has a fresh aroma with a bit of graininess.  First swig a bit fizzy with a nice mild malt. First impression it is more like a pil then a Weiss, that’s Bavarian versus Belgian.  Smooth not really grainy more of a traditional German Pilsner with a bit more of something. A pretty good wheat beer, but still a wheat beer, I would call it fair.

*Editor’s Comment: This is a Bavarian Wheat beer. Most of our wheat beer samplings have been of the Belgian persuasion. The average wheat beer rating to date has been 10.8 out of 20. No wheat beers to date have made it into the Super Suds category.

Final Rating: Fair to Middlin' at 14 out of 20
