Not that scary, now.

I remember as a kid seeing that super scary movie The Birds.* Only Alfred Hitchcock could make birds on a wire suspenseful and scary. I mean really, how can you be scared of something that has its pecker on its face? But I remember after seeing that movie when I walked outside I was looking up at the telephone wires, I’ll tell you that.

But this Wellington pale ale is made with local Hayhoe hops fresh off the wire. Sounds tasty. I don’t think even Hitchcock could have made that scary.

A light amber approaching ruby red pour. Juice and hops on the nose, I can’t decide whether they’re competing or collaborating. First taste is a citrus tropical juice with a slightly funky finish. It’s not that hoppy, no bitters.  A touch of floral enters the picture, and then a bit of graininess. The grassy floral funk of a finish is a bit off putting.

An OK pale, a bit busy and I felt there were elements that at times were competing rather than in balance.

*Editor’s Comment: The Birds was a 1963 movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It was Tippi Hedren’s film debut, and also starred Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy and Suzanne Pleshette.
