Warming up for St. Patty’s day, so I kicked things off with a Smithwick’s Red. Canada and France may be the only two places where the can says “Ale Rousse”. We are certainly distinct in that regard.
This beer poured a deep ruby red, very festive*. A nice froth on top. Almost no aroma to it, if I called it anything I would call it fresh. The first swig was very fizzy, I didn’t notice it in the pour but lots of carbonation in the beer. Second swig similar, and distracting, or rather, masking the flavour that I know is in there somewhere. Eventually the fizz settled down, it didn’t leave but became tenable. I guess like a lot of fine reds you have to let this one breathe a bit. What was eventually revealed was a good tasting, easy drinking with no bitters or hoppiness.
