An East and West Taste Test

Aviator IPA

Muskoka Brewery

6.5% Alcohol

Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet” so said Rudyard Kipling * long before Muskoka brewed this bicoastal toast to East and West.  The brew name reminded me of Howard Hughes, or is that Hugh Hefner? I always get those two confused. One the ultra rich germophobe aviator, ** the other the housecoat and slippers playboy. I get mixed up on Herbert Hoover and Hubert Humphrey too. I’ll be damned if I can remember what Hoover was famous for.

As far as this Muskoka flight of fancy goes, they have Mad Tom on a cross-country quest to combine the best from East and West  for a COM taste test, as you may have already guessed. Time to see if they achieve fusion or just confusion with this high flyer.

A darker orangish pour, a ruby red mango mix with some bright white cloud cover. A juicy piney aroma, is this bipolar pint the best of both worlds or a mental health issue? The taste, very juicy, very piney, and very refreshing. At first it seems like East and West are competing. The juice hangs tough while the pines back off a bit, which is exactly what they needed to do. The result is an interesting combo of tropical juice and hoppy pines that works, but leaves me wondering if either one or the other would be a better option.

*Editor’s Comment: Rudyard Kipling’s 1889 poem “The Ballad of East and West” contains this famous line and is in reference to British rule in India (where Kipling was born) and the disparate cultures.

**Editor’s Comment: Howard Hughes was once deemed the world’s richest man. In later life he suffered from extreme Obsessive Compulsive Disorders and behaviours that were once thought to be eccentric became clearly diagnosed mental illness.
