I remember the black light I had in my room as a teenager, with those velvet neon posters. That may have been the beginnings of my appreciation of the fine arts. But a black light always seemed like a bit of an oxymoron to me, like a civil engineer or a cool editor.* Burlington Brewers tell us their Andromeda Galaxy is a black light lager, and they go on to describe a beer that has the tastes of “roasted pecan, raisin swirl bread, black coffee, Graham crackers, buttered nuts, mocha latte, baking chocolate and braised green tingle. ” What the hell is a green tingle? Just about every taste in this galaxy and the next one (that would be Andromeda). As complex a craft as the space shuttle.
This black light pours a dark reddish brown. Some overflow on the top pop but no environmental impact. A dark roast dark berry aroma, a confused nose. The first taste was roast malt with some nutty notes and a dark berry base with a fizzy disposition. The only thing missing are hops and bitters. Blackberry starts to dominate and a lager sweet does a cameo. The roasted malt returns for a frantic finish.
It is a unique brew, I’ll give it that. Technically out of this world, in reality a level of complexity above and beyond. A touch too far out in space for my down to earth tastes.
