I sometimes indulge, if that’s the right word, in a big brewer beer, just to remind myself how much I enjoy craft beers. Case in point, although I’d never buy a case, is big ol’ Beck’s beer from Bremen, Germany. Part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev. empire, there’s none bigger when it comes to big brewers. Beck’s tell us this beer is made for the “confident, self-assured, and cosmopolitan” beer drinker, which begs the question, how did I get a hold of one?

The Bremen Town Musicians’ last gig.
Being brewed in Bremen, this beer brought to mind the Bremen donkey, part of the famous town musicians of Bremen quartet. * The main moral of the Grimm’s fairy tale is that old and seemingly useless individuals past their prime can band together to find new purpose. No wait, that’s the moral of cranky old men drinking beer. The town musicians of Bremen moral is that a kick in the head from a donkey is not a pleasant experience, even for the most hardcore criminals. Time to see if this Bremen Brauerei brew is a donkey kick to the head or provides us a somewhat more pleasant fairy tale ending.
Golden and clear beer, minimal froth so no blow off required. A light malty aroma, smells like a beer. First taste is a light malt body, bit of sweet to a slightly crisp grainy finish. That European graininess is evident from first swig to final quaff and is not my fav flav. Speaking of swigs, the big swig test renders more of the same, only more of it. I’m usually happy about European bonus beer but I could have done without it tonight.
A pedestrian pilsner at best, it filled a glass but not a void. No fairy tale finish to this one. I’m looking forward to my next beer sampling already, knowing that instead of a basic big brewer brew it will be a crafty creative craft.
