Bellwoods is offering up this paisley pint of the purple persuasion as a bookend brew to their Green Velvet in what I assume is their colorful fabric series of suds. I’m looking forward to their Plaid Pilsner and their Houndstooth Helles. Maybe a Leather & Lace Lager or a Silk & Satin Stout. A Gabardine Gose?* Whatever fabric that’s in fashion, we know the COM aren’t wearing it, but thanks to Bellwoods, at least we can drink it.
Purple is a styling we have run into before with a Kolsch and a Sour. Just to be clear, none of these beers are actually purple, or green for that matter. Perhaps they are a horse of a different colour. As far as this purple pale goes Bellwoods tell us with a degree of redundancy that may be even greater and more than my own, that this beer is Green Velvet’s “alter-ego, a codependent duo, an ego-less partnership.”** This beer may be lots of things, but right now it’s in my glass and at least one of us is about to get drunk.
This brew has a pulpy pour, not purply or paisley. A super thick bright orange pour with a white ribbon of a head. A very citrus tropical juicy and hoppy aroma. The first taste is very juicy with the bitters a bit over the top. But this brew quickly went into a high wire balancing act without a net and lived to tell the tale. It evolved into a nice balance of super juicy juice with big not so bad bitters. As it warmed the 7% solution came out with a bit of a boozy bite to it, but that went as quickly as it came.
A super juicy well balanced just right bitters through and through IPA. A juicer for the juicy juicer lovers.
