The great thing about having so many different craft breweries is the fantastic variety and availability of beer varieties across the country. The down side is that when you have a lot of brewers trying to make a distinctive brew, some of them are bound to be not so great. This is one of those. This beer from Purple Skull Brewing is different and not in a good way. I see what they were trying to do and I applaud the effort – but the result gives me the heebie-jeebies.
This brewer has a great story. A father/daughter team from northern ontario making beer. They added Organic Peruvian purple corn which makes them distinctive and healthy … so far so good. An interesting looking beer, it has a reddish tinge in the glass and not a lot of head. But it has a strange taste, very sharp, almost detergent flavour. It is an earthy, woody taste with a biting aftertaste that I didn’t enjoy. Now mind you, I did try this beer after previously drinking a fine Pale Ale and it could be that my taste buds were expecting more of the same and were not happy about being surprised with the Kolsch.
Kolsch is a great beer type … but adding purple corn isn’t an improvement.

Sounds like this purple Kolsch had you seeing red and feeling blue.
