Another St Jacobs Miracle?

St. Jacobs Country Lager

Stockyards Beverage Co.

4.8% Alcohol

Stockyard Brewers make their home in the St. Jacobs market district. I remember visiting St Jacobs Farmer’s Market * a few times back in the day. Mennonite horses and buggies, rows upon rows of fresh fruit and veggies, and the farm fresh aroma of cows in the field wafting through the market, being carried by the prevailing winds.  Livestock is a regular thing in the St Jacobs area.

As for the venerable and canonized St. Jacob of Nisbis (not of Kitchener), he recovered a piece of Noah’s ark and brought a dead man back to life. Could this brew be another St. Jacobs miracle?

I was out for dinner with the missus and was pleasantly surprised to see this brew on the menu, as I’m a big SY fan. Stockyards are on a COMDB super suds streak, as all of their brews reviewed to date have achieved that lofty status, even a sour! As for the brew at and in hand, they tell us that “Landbier”, which translates from German to “Country Beer”, is a rustic lager that was originally brewed in the Bavarian countryside of Southeast Germany. And now they’re bringing it on home to me.**

Dining in the Niagara region and it is clear the waitress is more adept at popping a cork than pouring a craft. The head waitress perhaps? No matter, just like the Rolling Stones, time is on my side.**

A heady caramel candy coloured pour, semi clear and all inviting. Malt to a fault on the nose. First swig is a full malty flavoured smooth lager, no real sweet but with just a touch of fizz on the backend. No real hops or bitters to impede the flow. Smooth and full flavoured, a great accompaniment with a meal. You could big swig it but there’s no point if your planning on a one and done like I was.

I don’t know about any miracles, but this is another Stockyards super suds, and I’m happy and not surprised.

*Editor’s Comment: St. Jacob is the patron saint of pilgrims and travellers. Although it is their historic settlement, Mennonites do not worship Saints. St. Jacobs (the Market) is the largest year round outdoor farmer’s market in Canada. Originally established in 1952 as The Stockyard Market it has been in operation ever since. Today it hosts over 400 local producers and artisans.

** Editor’s Comment: Sam Cooke’s 1962 recording of “Bring It On Home To Me” was the B-Side of the hit single “Having a Party”. “Time is on My Side” was written and recorded by Jerry Ragovoy. It was first recorded by jazz trombonist Kai Winding in 1963. The Rolling Stones heard the Irma Thomas blues rendition of the song and then recorded their own version in 1964.
