If you thought a cowbell light was part of Farmer’s Steve’s living room décor, you are correct. But this review isn’t about his taste in furnishings, which some would call 80’s yard sale ranch kitsch. It’s about Cowbell Brewing’s Standard, their light lager.

“Standard” is a trigger word for me. When I hear the word my pulse quickens, my chest tightens and beads of sweat appear on my forehead. This mental anxiety is accompanied by some physical pain from a series of whiplash injuries which never quite healed properly. * This PTSD is the result of an experience from 25 years ago. A skiing accident you may be thinking and based on my abilities on the slope that could well be the case, but no, I wish it was as simple as that. All those years ago I taught my daughter how to drive a standard. The violent stops and starts, the stuck stick shift, the grinding of that clutch into dust, the cross generational miscommunication, the stress. Sorry, I need a moment just to breathe……… I find drinking a beer tends to tone down the anxiety attacks a bit.

Speaking of beer, it’s time to see if this Standard is the gold standard, sub standard or just standard fare. The anxiousness has returned; I better start pouring and scoring.

A golden slightly hazy pour, looks like beer and nothing more. Malt nose, a full malty aroma. The first taste follows suit, it’s malty with lager sweet, a full flavoured brew with a bit of fizz, and a smooth finish. The malt is the main event here. Halfway through a bit of graininess enters the picture, some of that cattle fodder from the Cowbell barn.

An OK light, certainly more flavour than those big brewer lites. When it comes to a craft beer light, some would call it Standard.

*Editor’s Comment: From what I've seen those injuries seem to have resulted in some diminished mental capacity as well.
