Batten? Down the Hatch

Broad Reach Nor'Easter

Stonehook Brewing Co.

5.4% Alcohol

Batten down the hatch, there’s a nor’easter on the horizon. Forget the batten* whatever that is, it’s just down the hatch with this nor’easter. There certainly seems to be a sailing theme with Stonehooker’s “flagship” brew. Not being familiar with all these nautical terms I had to get educated to a few of them. You would think after sampling a Hazy Mariner I would be up to speed on such things but that was more of a poetry lesson. Let’s put it this way, Broad Reach** isn’t what I thought it was at all.

Not a New England IPA, but a Nor’Easter. No, a nor’easter isn’t a spring egg hunt in Canada, it’s a wicked storm coming in off the Atlantic. I don’t know much about such things but I did read the book “The Perfect Storm”*** (true story, I actually did read the book) and watched the movie too to do a fact check on the book. One thing I do know, you don’t want to be out at sea droppin’ lobster traps when a nor’easter hits.

A nice golden clam chowder hazy pour, very hazy with bits in the broth, and a white cap rolling in. A hoppy aroma with some tropical destinations in the background. It tastes hoppy with a tart citrus finish but not too too tart. A slightly bitter finish, fizzy and busy. Lots going on in this brew, a storm of hops and fruit and fizz and bitters. Not quite the perfect storm but still a good solid NEIPA.

*Editor’s Comment: A batten is a long, flat strip of squared wood or metal used to hold something in place or as a fastening against a wall. The term batten down the hatches is a nautical term referring to securing a ship's hatch-tarpaulins, especially when rough weather is expected. These days it is more often used as an idiom to prepare for a difficulty or crisis.

**Editor’s Comment: A broad reach is a point of sailing in which the wind blows over a boat's quarter, between the beam and the stern.

***Editor’s Comment: George Clooney was actually the fourth choice for the lead in the movie. The Director, Wolfgang Petersen asked Harrison Ford to play the role but he declined. His second choice was Nicolas Cage who also turned it down, and Mel Gibson was offered the role but wanted too much money, $25 Million!
