They call it “Best of the British”. I remember hearing the term “Best of the British” before, which I thought meant good luck. I checked it out, it means and I quote “ to wish someone luck, especially when you do not think they have much chance of success or happiness.” Not sure what that has to do with this beer but thought it was interesting, maybe even educational. Kind of a backhanded compliment. Used in a sentence “Best of the British to the Maple Leafs on their quest to win the Stanley Cup.” Enough of the linguistics lesson.
Brewed in Wolverhampton in the UK near Birmingham, about half way between London and Liverpool. Enough of the geography lesson.
Wolverhampton’s claim to fame. Home town of the rock group Slade. Their big hit was “Cum On Feel the Noize” (Slade’s spelling, not mine) which starts out with the lyrics, “Cum on feel the noize, Girls rock your boys.” Not exactly Shakespeare is it? And Wolverhampton was the first place to have a traffic light! Enough of the history lesson.
More interesting info on the can. It says that “UK health departments recommend that adult men do not regularly exceed 3 to 4 units per day.” So I guess the UK health department says it is OK to drink 4 Lancaster Bombers a day? I would expect that from the Irish health department, but the British? It also says to “avoid alcohol if trying to conceive”. I guess that applies to both sexes but for different reasons? Perhaps ironic that alcohol is sometimes a contributing factor in pregnancy. Enough of the biology lesson.
So I get my International 500ml bonus beer. Nice amber pour, looking good. A nice quaff, good flavor, not overpowering, a good old regular amber. I wouldn’t call it best of the British, I mean it’s not the Beatles or Winston Churchill, but it’s a good pint. I can’t conceive what I would be trying to conceive while drinking a Lancaster Bomber, let alone 4 of them, so no issues there! And I don’t think I will meet the 4 beer quota today either. Not a great beer but good enough for me.
