Black Sail, and we aren’t talking about November 25th.* I love the name Black Sail**. It sounds ominous, like pirates on the horizon, ready to make me walk the pint! It turns out there are a number of brews named Black Sail and not only that, there is actually a brewery named Black Sail Brewery out of Plymouth. There was even a TV show called Black Sails. I guess I’m not the only one that loves the name.
The artwork on the can is great too, with a tall ship on the horizon silhouetted by a full moon, flying red strip flags which warn of, or perhaps are a harbinger of, danger. Danger, pirates! The only pirates I have to watch for these days are those damn porch pirates that go after my beer of the month club deliveries.
Beautiful pour, octopus ink black with slightly tan and white foam topside. A heavy malt, porter type aroma, the word “me hearties”** comes to mind, as in a hearty full aroma. Lock Street is taking no prisoners with this strong flavoured dark lager. Wow, very full malt flavour with coffee and chocolate notes, no bitters but a bit of a surprise sweet finish, almost tastes like cherry. Time to take another swig and figure this complex brew out. Porter flavoured but with a lager smooth sailing mouthfeel and a slightly sweet finish. Very smooth.
A full flavour cool fall evening dark lager that is delicious and nutritious. Well I’m not sure about the nutritious part, but I am sure about the delicious.
