The old man’s favourite TV show was Gunsmoke, starring James Arness as Matt Dillon. But if he wanted a change of pace from a western he would watch Bonanza.* The trials and tribulations of the trice widowed Ben Cartwright and his three sons (each from a different wife), Adam, Hoss and Little Joe. Fittingly for this brew and review, the Cartwright’s ranch the Ponderosa was located on the Eastern shore of Lake Tahoe, Nevada. I can still see the map of the Ponderosa, burning as the credits ran. As for the Tenyaya Creek, it’s located in Yosemite National Park, California.
And now, another defining moment for COMDB! The term bonanza is defined as an event that creates sudden and unexpected good fortune. As in “how fortunate am I that the Yard House and it’s 180 beers on tap is so close to where I’m staying”.
Shout out to the Yard House. If you are in Las Vegas and want great beer selection, reasonable prices (for Vegas), great service and tasty eats, this is the place to be.
A brown is not my first thirst go to but my procurement policy of local first and my curiosity combined to tap into this NV Bonanza.
You picture someone shouting Bonanza when they find gold, but there’s no gold in this brown. Dark and clear, one Vegas downtown brown going down. An aroma of malt with a touch of nut.** Definitely full flavoured, a malty nutty buddy. No bitters or sweets and not very fashion forward, just two shades of brown. A hint of caramel shows up by the second or third pull. And a dry finish. It evolves to include a slight bitter backend, a buxom brown. Caramel, malt, and nut balance. Too nutty for an amber but there are some similarities.
