Sawdust City tells us that after a long day of downhill skiing there’s nothing better than sitting in front of a fire, feet up, with a cold draft, the ski boots off. For me, after a long day of skiing I’m just happy that I’m not in a cold drafty hospital gown with my feet up in traction.   They say pride comes before a fall, so chances are pretty good I won’t fall on the hill because as far as my skiing technique goes there’s nothing to be proud of. When it comes to skiing my claim to fame is tame but not lame. And as far as my on the hill skill goes, it’s all downhill from here.

So the SC team offers us a scotch ale as some serious après ski fireside suds. At a heavy handed 8.3% ABV you want to make sure you take those boots off before you start to quaff. Time to see if this one will knock my socks off too.

A dark amber brown, reflecting a tinge of red from the fireplace glow. A nice white, tan froth dissipated quickly. A strong toffee aroma, a bit boozy on the nose. At first taste a full mouth feel goes to strong sharp caramel with a boozy back bite finish. Amber on steroids. Danger, we’re bombing a triple diamond on this one. I regrouped with salty snack for my second swig. As it warmed, I warmed to it. The strong first swig gave way to a balanced full flavoured scotch ale. I realized that it was mellowing at approximately the same rate as I was. Coincidence? I think not.  Strong yes, but the rough edges faded away with each swig and what was left was a fine full flavoured fireside companion. Quite suitable for a welcome respite from the winter wasteland just beyond the walls.
