Grand Trunk Railroad. Didn’t see that coming.
St.Thomas, the Railway City, has seen a few boxcars in it’s heyday. More than 100 rail cars a day used to travel through the St.Thomas station including the locomotive that hit and killed poor Jumbo the elephant! Does it seem ironic only to me that the most famous elephant that ever lived was killed by a “Grand Trunk” locomotive.* A life size statue of Jumbo now graces 76 Talbot Street. There is a Railway City Beer that is a tender and touching tribute to poor old Jumbo. It’s called “Dead Elephant” Ok, maybe not so tender and touching a name, but at least Jumbo isn’t forgotten.
This brew name remined me of Boxcar Willie singing songs about riding the rails, not to be confused with Grand Funk Railroad who did do a cover of “The Loco-Motion” (chugga chugga motion like a railroad train now). They were both American bands.** So is Blue Oyster Cult who do a stirring live version of “Hot Rails to Hell”. Or how about Glen Miller and his “Chattanooga Choo Choo”. Getting all the Railroads in Monopoly is a good short term cash flow strategy but won’t win you the game. I seem to have gone off the rails once again.
This Boxcar pours golden and fairly clear with highhat head that rings bright white. A mild fruit aroma, not exactly a juiced-up juicer. The taste follows suit, with very mild fruit, subdued fizz and barely bitters. A laidback not too juicy a little bit fizzy and bitters riding the rails out of town. A light almost session IPA. Easy drinking and refreshing, I’ll give it that, but not the jumbo juicy I was expecting. A combination of mild juice, mild fizz and mild bitters resulting in a mild but balanced brew.
Not to be confused with Boxcar Bock ***, the two brews occupy opposite ends of the strength spectrum.
