The craft beer industry for most brewers is largely a community endeavour. They cherish their mug club members, their local partners, and the communities they live and work in. Case in point are the fine folks at Fine Balance. One of their stated values is, and I quote “We value partnering with nonprofits, charitable organizations, and community groups to raise awareness for issues related to systemic inequality, inequity, and injustice.”

Enter their Italian Pilsner Brave. Part of their Quarterly Collaboration Project, a portion of the proceeds from this beer go to The Kingston Interval House.

According to Canada’s Olympic team “Brave is Unbeatable” although a number of Mike Tyson’s opponents may dispute that statement. Time to see if this Brave is hard to beat.

A golden semi clear partly hazy and partially cloudy pils pour. Minimal head, no scuba gear required for this one. Malt aroma, not malty, just malt. First quaff is malt and a bit of fizz with a very mild crisp as in an almost smooth finish. Nice. A bigger swig reveals a touch of backend bitters too. The sequence settles into malt then lager sweet to a crisp slightly bitter finish. It should come as no surprise that this brew is finely balanced. It has a creamier mouthfeel than a typical pils, Italian or otherwise.

You don’t have to be brave to drink this beer, but you’d be crazy not to.

*Editor’s Comment: Kingston Interval House (KIH) is a local agency in Kingston, Ontario that provides 24-hour safe emergency shelter, community-based counselling services and Second Stage Housing to women, youth and children who have experienced violence. They are currently celebrating 50 years of service to the local community.
