Wayne Gretzky Craft Brewery

5% Alcohol

I had saved this Gretzky beer for a Saturday night hockey game but that is not how it turned out.  What is the definition of apathy? A Leafs fan watching an Ottawa Montreal game. So after one period of that sad performance it was on to March Maaaaaadness in April. The final four premier pairing, undefeated Gozanga and Cinderella UCLA.  ‎What a great game. I was actually cheering for the underdog but hard not to enjoy a Gonzaga buzzer beating winning basket from half court in OT.

For those of you reading this review that are younger (quite possibly no one) Wayne Gretzky is the father of Paulina Gretzky, the model, actress, and singer, and she is also the partner of world famous golfer Dustin Johnson. For those of us old enough to remember Wayne Gretzky, he played hockey and scored a few goals many years ago, then coached an Arizona hockey team. More recently Wayne Gretzky has attached his name to a restaurant (the downtown Toronto one just closed), winery, hockey and football teams, and has been selling everything from pillows to insurance. But I didn’t know he had a craft brewery.   So I checked into it and it seems the Peller winery is brewing the beer.

This beer has a different taste to it, driven by the rye grains I assume. Some will enjoy it, others may be a bit put off by it. I liked the beer, found it smooth, not hoppy, with a complex flavour. Not sure what it has to do with No99 other than Peller giving him some money to put his name and number on the can? For hockey fans we look “forward” to “icing” other craft beer offerings from the Great One.

A good beer, not a great one.
