Citrusy Pale Ale

Creemore Springs Brewery

5.6% Alcohol

A citrusy pale eh. I remember way back in the day when Creemore Springs was a craft beer brewer.* Their beer, they only made a lager, would show up very now and then and would be a welcome respite from the Canadians and Blues that were standard fare. But in 2005 Molson bought Creemore with statements that “Nothing will change”.

Fast forward and today it seems to me that lots has changed. Creemore offers 5 core brews plus seasonal brews and their “discovery” series. One of those core beers is this Citrusy Pale Ale, our seventh Creemore review to date. Their Pils and Schwarz and Bock scored super suds status, the rest, including this one, not so good.

A bubbly ruby orange pour, visual clues of grapefruit inclusion? It certainly smells tropical juicy. First taste is a citrus juice funk, purée juicy, off-putting. The malt in the background is combining with an over juicing to produce a dank funk. No grapefruit bitters. The juiciness started to settle down a bit, still juicy but not sickly so. Not hoppy or piney or malty, just a dank juicy pale. They should have grabbed some of the excess bitters from their Boundless IPA and inserted them on the finish to make this pale more palatable.Anything to create some balance.

Not real bad, but not that great, and leaves me wondering what it would be like if Molson hadn’t bought them.**

*Editor’s Comment: Creemore Springs Brewery was founded in 1987 in the town of Creemore. In 2005 Molson paid an estimated $25 Million for the craft brewer.

**Editor’s Comment: Wondering aimlessly again.
