For years Steam Whistle had the motto “Do One Thing and Do It Really Really Well”. I will ignore the redundant adjective and focus on their message, which was that they brew one beer, their premium pilsner, and they do that very well. I would tend to agree with that statement, Steam Whistle does brew a great pil. But these days SW brews five different beers, three of their own along with license to brew Fat Tire and Voodoo Ranger in Canada. Which begs the question, since they no longer do just one thing, do they do five different brands “really really well”?
Today’s sampling is Steam Whistle’s Premium Session Lager. I found it interesting that they don’t offer a traditional lager, just a session. Nice light aroma, very clear pour, very thin white head. My old buddy JT described the pour as Crystal, Amber’s fairer sister. I have never seen a beer so clear. Not even Sleeman’s Clear is this clear, is that clear?* They describe their session lager as a light beer which is an apt description. This session lager has a low ABV, it has flavour but is not hoppy or bitter or anything other than a nice light lager. Very easy drinking, which leads to it being very refreshing. Call it a session beer, or a light beer, but it is a great tasting light lager. Steam Whistle has done this session lager really really well.
