A precarious precipice, the frighteningly dangerous edge of a very steep rock cliff, where one wrong move will cause you to plummet to your untimely death on the jagged rocks below, leaving your lifeless body at the mercy of the merciless carnivorous scavengers that roam those killing canyons. * In such a situation a fine balance is not just good to have, it’s a matter of life or death! A fine sense of balance also comes in handy while riding a unicycle, which just happens to be the logo of Fine Balance brewing. Coincidence? Of course not. Smooth segue? Not so much.
But I do find myself fearlessly pouring a Precipice, having faith in my own sense of balance doggedly maintained primarily by my one and done approach to beer tasting, although becoming somewhat compromised by advanced age.
The pour is a golden verging on yellow sunset over the mountain kinda pour, a fine froth atop. An ever so subtle aroma of lemony citrus fueled my curiosity. First taste starts out with a strong lemony citrus juice followed by a more traditional Saaz style grainy crisp bitter pils finish. An interesting sequence. The lemon settles down a bit, and the acerbic finish mellows as everything eases up. A juicy pale meets a classic pils finish, new world juice and old world crisp. And you may not be surprised to learn it is all finely balanced.
A precarious precipice, probably. A precarious pilsner, not at all. More probably precious and precocious. And very tasty.
