Conway and Kayne: A Collaboration Made in Heaven

The Black Lager

Silversmith Brewing Co.

5% Alcohol

Thirsty Thursday with the Crownsmen and Jerrod is trying to recover from a serious HR faux pas which came close to sinking the ship, while Rory is chomping at the bit for his AM brunch quaff. * Me, I’m PM chilling and swilling with a local favourite from wine country, Silversmith’s award winning Schwarzbier, The Black Lager.

The deep and stimulating conversation focused on nuclear energy and innovation then took a U-turn as Jerrod interjected with a Kanye West quote “I think business should be stupider. Just talk to me like a 4-year-old.” At first I thought he was talking about a Western Conway, which of course would be Conway Twitty. How about a Conway Twitty quote instead, ”I’m the only thing I’ll ever hold against you.”

This could be epic!

Conway worked with Loretta Lynn while Kayne worked with Lonnie Lynn. Coincidence? I think not. I wonder what they would come up with if Conway & Kanye had ever got together.  How about “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses for the Devil in a New Dress”.  Or sure to be a classic “I Can’t Stop Loving Drunk and Hot Girls.”  Maybe the most anticipated duet would be “Red Neckin’ Love Makin’ Monster.” ** Of course, this would be a collaboration made in heaven since Conway passed some time ago. My Editor has informed me that I have digressed and possibly transgressed as well. On to the review.

This dark lager pours black lacquer black, with a proper tan topper, an impressive pour for sure.  A strong stout like aroma with the roasted malt, cocoa and coffee all at the table. Jerrod enjoyed this brew and came up with blackberries on this one. Actually a good call on his part because the strong malt, cocoa coffee combo combined for a sweet hint of berry taste. Rory would prefer a breakfast IPA for his brunch brew. Me, I enjoy a dark lager and this is a good one. Strong flavours but well balanced, not nitro smooth but smooth enough for me. An award winner for good reason.

This Schwarzbier roasted malt coffee cocoa collaboration is a much smoother mix than country Conway and hip-hop Kayne would ever be.***

*Editor’s Comment: Show recording time 2:30PM EST for COMDB, 11:30 AM PST for the Crownsmen.

**Editor’s Comment: Kayne West (his real name) is a rapper. He has sold over 100 million records and won 24 Grammys. Conway Twitty (Harold Lloyd Jenkins) was a country music artist who had 40 number one hits on the Billboard Country Music chart. He won 15 Country Music awards and two Grammys in his music career. He was also a talented baseball player and was recruited by the Philadelphia Phillies. One of the credits on Kayne’s song “Devil in New Dress” goes to Carol King since part of the refrain comes from the song “Will You Ever Love Me Tomorrow”. “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses” was written by Paul and Gene Nelson and was a big hit for Kathy Mattea before Conway recorded it. “I Can’t Stop Loving You” was Don Gibson country classic that Conway covered. Maybe not quite as classic is Kanye’s “Drunk and Hot Girls” from his 2007 album Graduation. Twitty’s 1981 release “Red Neckin’ Love Makin’ Night” was his 27th number one hit on the Country Music charts. Kayne’s “Monster” was a collaboration with Jay-Z from his 2010 album “My Dark and Twisted Fantasy”.

***Editor’s Comment: You never know. The Jack White-Loretta Lynn collaboration 2004 album “Van Lear Rose” won the 2005 Grammy for Best Country Album. The Lynn White duet “Portland Oregon” won the Grammy for Best Country Collaboration.
