If found mention “balance sheet” to confirm it is indeed Rory.
Lights, Camera, Action, it’s The Crownsmen Show, brought to you by Cranky Old Men Drinking Beer. I joined Jerrod and Gaudy, but for this show we were missing Rory! Well, missing is probably too strong a word, let’s just say Rory wasn’t there. Although Rory’s financial acumen wasn’t on display today, Jerrod was in fine form with his Top 5 list. He took us through the top 5 corn producers in the world, it was just a-maizing. *
We then discussed Coca Cola’s new health drink in the US, a simple fix to the classic drink by replacing high fructose corn syrup (corn grown in the US) with cane sugar (imported from Mexico). But don’t worry, when it comes to sugar content nothing has changed, one 500ml bottle of coke can still provide you with 110% of your recommended daily sugar intake.** If you’re a beer drinker make sure you have some Coca Cola handy because beer has 0 grams of sugar in it, so you will need to get your sugar from somewhere else. ***
Speaking of beer, we did sample some suds as well, my favourite part of the show I might add. From a BC based brewer we are familiar with, a Fernie ale from ski country, their Tunnel Creek™ Kölsch was the brew du jour. The fine folks at Fernie tell us “It’s a beer that tastes like beer.” After all the fancy pants pints we sample, a beer that tastes like beer will be refreshing on its own. Time to see if it’s a beer that tastes like great beer.
It certainly looks like beer. A pale golden slightly hazy pour, a slim head atop of this mountain brewed brew. A fresh malt aroma, with some very mild hops in there too. And the taste is beer! Fresh malt body with very mild bitters, the classic one two punch. Refreshing, down to earth but not grainy, it has a clean slightly crisp finish. Easy drinking. This novel approach of a beer that tastes like beer seems to be working for Fernie.
One thing that Jerrod and I did agree on during the show was how much we enjoyed this Tunnel Creek mountain respite.**** Well done Fernie.
*Editor’s Comment: I’m surprised this website wasn’t on the list.
**Editor’s Comment: For a 2,000 calorie per day diet the recommend sugar intake is 50 grams per day. A 500ml bottle of Coke contains 55 grams of sugar, for you coffee or tea drinkers, you would need approximately 14 teaspoons of sugar in your cup to match that. U.S. adults consume more than two to three times the recommended daily allowance of sugar, according to the American Heart Association. As far as replacing high-fructose corn syrup with cane sugar it appears that there are no health benefits. US is one of the leading corn producing countries in the world, however most of their cane sugar is imported from Mexico and Brazil.
***Editor’s Comment: Please don’t tell your signifigant other that we advised you “to get your sugar somewhere else.” Such a statement may be taken out of context and result in one of those relationship discussions about feelings. As for beer, it typically has no sugar because the natural sugars are converted to alcohol during the brewing process. However non-alcoholic beer can have 10 to 15 grams of sugar per bottle/can.

No it’s not the sugar shack. It’s the Tunnel Creek Hut.
****Editor’s Comment: Tunnel Creek is part of the Fernie hiking and ski touring trails in the Lizard Range. The Tunnel Creek Hut is a recreational facility built along that trail in the mountains 5600 feet above sea level. The facility is available to all for day use. Trail skiers and hikers can book overnight stays in the hut as well.
