This week’s international cross-country quaffing has taken us to PEI, Ontario, New York state, British Columbia and now a binge in Calgary. From Hogtown to Cowtown for some Kiwi Enigma hops.  The Village brewers tell us this is a 4.5% crushable, the Ontario Liquor Board stuck a 5.4% sticker on the can. The hops aren’t the only enigma here.

Ooh lala, in the 60’s.

When it comes to binge watching the Department of Morality is the Queen. Me, not so much. I made it through the “Game of Thrones”, I could handle the dragons but my suspension of disbelief gets suspended when it comes to  zombies. And considering the chemistry teachers I have had over the years, “Breaking Bad” was certainly a stretch. We also checked out some of the shows we watched back in the day. Gilligan’s Island was as lame as Chester.* Barbara Eden’s provocative outfit in the 60’s on “I Dream of Genie” would be a sunscreen coverup on today’s beaches. And I could never fathom why Darren didn’t encourage his wife to use her powers on “Bewitched”. What’s was that all about?  The sexual tension on “Moonlighting” between Cybil Sheperd and Bruce Willis amounts to only about 1 1/2 shades of grey these days.

Now I’m on a one and done binge watch with this beer. A bright golden days of television kind of pour, a slight white head making a rerun. Fruit and hops but no malt on the nose, I am anticipating some kiwi zing. It quaffs fresh, fizzy, fruity and frisky. A bit of a bitter finish, but no hoppy zing. It has a nice balance with just the right amount of everything and in the right pecking order too. It is a crushable pale ale. As it warmed a bit a little bit of malt started showing up for a slightly funky hop malt combo but the balancing act continues.  Malt with crisp emerged toward the end.

It wouldn’t be my binge brew of choice, but this one was tasty.

*Editor’s Comment: Chester Goode was a Deputy on the TV show “Gunsmoke”. James Arness played Matt Dillon and Dennis Weaver played the deputy with the bad limp.
