Some breweries put a lot of effort into their label design. Wild colours, inspiring images and snappy phrases are everywhere when you check out the craft beer aisle at your local retailer. So there is something refreshing about this brew titled “Crappy Beer” with a bland label and the catch phrase “It’s a lager, just drink it.”
It doesn’t pretend to make you want to get naked and jump in the lake, it doesn’t offer any suggestions on how chill you will become or how many friends you will likely find. I need to check with our marketing guru, Farmer Steve to see if this is some kind of anti-marketing ploy. It comes from a winery, the Frisky Beaver on the north shore of lake Erie. So my guess is the wine guys wanted to make a beer and convinced the Sales guys that it would enhance their wine sales if they offered a stark choice – delicious wine or crappy beer. That’s a guess. It could also be a dig at the local breweries… or maybe just a joke?
Whatever the reason, I found it among my Christmas gifts this year and had to give it a try. It isn’t half bad. They avoided adding a bunch of unusual ingredients to make it unique – and the taste is decent. There is a bit of a woody flavour and some bitterness at the start, but mostly smooth and clean. I found my self looking to see if I might have received more than a single can. This is a good lager that isn’t complicated and you should follow the advice on the label and “just drink it”.
In a twist of irony, this Crappy beer is not bad at all.
