Double Trouble and we aren’t talking about Stevie Ray Vaughn’s backup band.
When I reviewed Mad Tom I posed the question, is he angry mad or crazy mad. With this strong Imperial IPA, Tom is twice as mad and there is no doubt about it, he is crazy mad, as in seriously unbalanced.
I was looking forward to this strong IPA because I enjoyed Mad Tom. But this is a completely different kettle of fish as they say.* The first significant difference is the pour. Twice as Mad has a bright golden hazy pour versus a darker pour for Mad Tom. Mad Tom has a full head whereas Twice as Mad has almost no head at all. This beer has a very strong aroma, before I even tasted it I knew this beer was kicking ass and taking names.** A beer liqueur aroma? The taste is all booze, minimal hops. Harsh. Smooth like scotch, not like beer, does that make sense? It does to me.
This one is mad as in crazy, insane, and definitely unbalanced. Mad as in I am mad this beer was not good for me. Unbalanced as too boozy, simple as that. I kept hoping it would ease up a bit but a boozy taste hung on long and strong. Both the beer and I were hazy after one. For me it was one and done.
