County Kolsch

Midtown Brewery Co.

4.5% Alcohol

No umlaut in sight, this is a Midtown County Kolsch, as in Wellington’s county, that being Prince Edward. To earn the umlaut you need to be from Germany so they say, but no matter. Wellington can hold his own, he did OK at Waterloo didn’t he?* Back in the day a few of us COM did OK at Waterloo too, but we were festing not fighting. Maybe that’s what the world needs these days, a little more festing and a lot less fighting. There’s a new year’s resolution I think a lot of us could get behind.

The Earl of Forfar as featured in Hello! magazine.

As for the modern-day Prince Edward,** the brother of King Charles, he is the Earl of Forfar and the Duke of Edinburgh. No relation to Steve Earle and the Dukes.***  For additional details on the Royal Family refer to any edition of Hello! Magazine. Despite being an Earle, to the best of our knowledge, Steve has never been featured in Hello! Magazine.

The Earle named Steve. Not yet featured in Hello! magazine

Beer review time. This cold craft county Kolsch makes for an AJ clear pour, and in customary Kolcsh fashion has as much head over the brew as there is umlauts over the “o”. A bit of apple or some other indiscernible fruit grows on the nose. First swig is mild malt with apple fruit, a bit fizzy and a very mild bitter crisp finish and after taste. Refreshing with a plain and simple malt body and an almost a non-existent smooth finish resulting in a very easy drinking brew. A slight crisp bitter finish comes and goes like as unpredictably as the noon train. I’m not normally a big Kolsch fan or any other size for that matter, but this one sure hit the spot. This crushable Kolsch is an easy drinking super suds suggestion for a summer refresher that goes down fine anytime.

*Editor’s Comment: The Duke of Wellington defeated Napoleon Bonaparte at the battle of Waterloo in 1815.

**Editor’s Comment: Prince Edward County was created in 1792 and named after Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent. He was the fourth son of King George III and father of Queen Victoria and was commander-in-chief of British North America.

***Editor’s Comment: Steve Earle and his backup band, the Dukes (and Duchesses), have recorded a number of albums. They have been together off and on since 1982.

Final Rating: Fine Anytime at 15 out of 20
