Dark Lager? Sounds like COMDB to the rescue with some entertaining names for this aptly but unimaginatively named brew. How about “Drinking with Springsteen on the Edge of Town or maybe Dancing with a Dark. * Or a classic reference, “A Beer After Conrad’s Own Heart.** Or for you sci-fi geeks maybe “Dark Vader”. Or a fashion statement “Dark is the New Black”. You can call it anything you want as long as I get to drink it.

This Side Launch brew makes for a dark festive pour, the holiday season is fast encroaching. Next thing you know Bud will be visiting us. Mild malt roast on the end of the nose. The first taste is a nutty buddy with a bit of fizz, a full flavoured malt roast and just a smidgen of bitter, ever so subtle. I was trying to decide whether there was any lager sweet in the mix, and I decided there was.  A bit of cocoa sweet in fact, to balance the act. The nut left,*** a slight fizz stayed the course, and the ever so subtle cocoa resided in the middlin’ roast flavour.

And there it was gone, which leads me to believe that a) it was in fact an easy drinking beer or, b) maybe I was thirsty or c) all of the above. Super suds status secured. A tasty dark.

*Editor’s Comment: Springsteen’s fourth studio album was the 1978 “Darkness on the Edge of Town”. “Dancing in the Dark” was from his 1984 album “Born in the USA” and was his biggest hit and a 1985 Grammy winner for him.

**Editor’s Comment: “Heart of Darkness” is a 1899 novella by Joseph Conrad. Coppola’s 1979 movie “Apocalypse Now” was roughly based on Conrad’s book.

***Editor’s Comment: There's still one nut in the mix.
