At Clear Lake Brewery answering the dinner bell and you may be surprised to learn that I didn’t have a beer with dinner. I did however have a beer for dessert. After a hearty healthy helping of crispy chicken sandwich I partook in a pint of lactose laden draft dessert stout.
When I was a kid there was a kid named Mitch who would swing for the fences every time. Unfortunately we were playing hockey not baseball and I probably still have some scars from his vicious hacks from 55 years ago. So I always thought that we called it shinny because of the season long semi-permanent bruises on my shins.* My hockey career was all outdoor rink and road hockey, so this brew’s name brought back some memories.

The Jesus Loves That Pink Ball
Tap to glass poured bowling ball black (The Dude’s bowling ball, not the pink bowling ball The Jesus rolls with)** with a meagre white, not tan, bubbly topping. A mild fresh stout aroma, not aggressive, the word mellow comes to mind. The first swig is a mild stout with a thin watery mouthfeel. No bitters, a touch of coffee and a bit of cocoa, very tasty. Is that vanilla or a lactose induced hallucination? It is only slight, just enough served to smooth the experience. Despite the lactose the sweet is very mild as well, resulting in a tasty, mild and very easy drinking stout, for dessert.
