Developing a Complex

Burst!

Great Lakes Brewery

4.5% Alcohol

What we have here is an identity crisis. Am I a pale ale, or an IPA? I can’t decide. I am bursting with Hoppy flavour but trying to be light and smooth at the same time. Maybe I am a wanna be lager too. Or a lite beer? Not as many personalities as Sybil* but darn close.

A New England Pale Ale to be precise. According to GLB it is driven by “hop rockets”. They got the name right because it is bursting with hoppiness, but interestingly enough not all that bitter which is the ale personality taking over from the IPA? So does it work? Well sort of.

It is refreshing, I will give it that. But perhaps a bit confusing for someone who is trying to classify it. Or as brewers like to say, the taste is complex. But of course I would think anyone with multiple personalities may be prone to develop a complex. Perhaps this is a fusion of different styles? The confusion continues.

The trick here is not to worry about what it is, just enjoy what it is.

Whatever it is, it is refreshing.

*Editor’s Comment: Fact Check- In the 1973 book based on the true story, Sybil (real name Shirley Mason) claimed she was dealing with 16 different personalities so I wouldn’t say it was “darn close”. However she later came out to say they were all made up, so she didn’t really have all those personalities, she was just a darn good bull shitter.

Reviewer’s Comment: Fascinating…….zzzzzzzz.
