We have a new product line to show you.

Is Avon selling beer door to door now? * No, it’s not the Avon Lady pressing that perfectly painted perfumed pointing finger on your doorbell peddling a new product. It’s The Avon Ale, from those crafters of curious crafts, the Something in the Water crew. What the SITW gang is referring to is not Stratford upon Avon,** the birthplace of the Bard, but The River Avon at Somerset, the birthplace of the English ale equivalent to the light lager.  When it comes to the River Avon, there is something in the water that shouldn’t be there, *** so let’s just be thankful its water isn’t in this brew.

A clear copper colour pour, devoid of any distractions such as head. In fact, right from the get go there was no foam dome, no froth to blow off, no head I said. Odd but not unheard of, let the sampling continue.

A ruddy caramel malt thing going on in the aroma department, light camber of amber. First taste is a watery mouthfeel caramel sweet smooth ale. The bitters maybe with the head, as in nowhere to be found.  A bit nutty with the sweet, a coppery caramel. A very light amber but something seemed to be missing on the finish, a touch of bitters would have tied the whole thing up in a bow.

*Editor’s Comment: The word “avon” comes from a Celtic word meaning river. The Avon company was founded in London England in 1886 by David McConnel who was a fan of Shakespeare and named it after the Bard’s birthplace. The Avon company has a storied past but recently filed for bankruptcy of its international operations and restructuring due to over $1 billion in debt from hundreds of lawsuits claiming its talc-based products cause cancer.

**Editor’s Comment: When it comes to The Avon River or The River Avon, there are 5 in Australia, 2 in Canada, 2 in New Zealand, 3 in Scotland and countless other ambiguations of the name around the world. Narrowing it down to the UK doesn’t narrow it down much as there are 5 Avon Rivers in the UK including Stratford upon Avon, the birthplace of the Shakespeare. The river that Somerset is on is also referred to as the Bristol Avon, or the Lower Avon.

***Editor’s Comment: The Lower Avon is heavily polluted in various areas and in its tributaries with high levels of nitrates and phosphates as well as zinc, cadmium and lead.

Final Rating: Up the River with a 14 out of 20
