Double Trouble but Elvis Has Left the Building

Fresh Nectar

Rouge River Brewing Co.

8.2% Alcohol

Elvis had some double trouble* and so did Lynyrd Skynyrd,** and last night the Blue Jays had some too. Now it looks like Rouge River has some brewing. As in their Fresh Nectar Double Hazy IPA coming in at double the ABV of my last brewskie encounter with a dear old Philomena Pilsner. Come to think of it, looks like I’m the one that has double trouble.

RR gave us such notable brew reviews as their Dankzilla putting some dank in our tank, and Holy Trinity and the immaculate misconception.  Both these past pints were super suds status. Fresh Nectar, not so much.

A brick thick pour from the extra pulp section with a bit of a foam fest causing some trouble topside. A strong hoppy double juicy aroma, no shrinking violet this one. The first sip is super juicy peachy pineapple with a double hoppy funk of a finish. Full mouthfeel and lots of head, takin’ a break to see what shakes out.  Lotsa juice with a bit of a harsh dastardly double finish, a troubling development. Too much double, yep it’s double trouble. Thick and juicy with a kick ass finish that’s maybe a touch too much for yours truly. At 8.2% should I be surprised?

Time for the moment we’ve all been waiting for, well me anyway. The big swig test! Don’t try this at home or anywhere else for that matter, this one has too much swagger to be a big swigger.

A juicy and refreshing body but don’t tackle this one if you’re thirsty. With a very strong, almost harsh at times, finish it lends itself to smaller swigs.  An 8.2% double bubble with no comic in the wrapper.***

*Editor’s Comment: The 1967 Elvis movie “Double Trouble” included an album and song of the same name. It was Presley’s 24th feature film. Presley was paid $750,000 and 40% of the profits for the film which probably wasn’t much with a box office of $1.6M.

**Editor’s Comment: Lynyrd Skynyrd’s 1976 song “Double Trouble” was not a light hearted romp like the Elvis song. Eleven times in jail, the singer tells us “I can jump in a rose bush and come up smelling like shit”.

***Editor’s Comment: Double Bubble chewing gum first came out in 1928. Fleer had been looking for a gum that you could blow bubbles with that didn’t stick and Walter Diemer, an accountant with the group, discovered the formula. Since it’s inception it had a comic in the wrapper, originally known as Fleer Funnies. Pud and his friends made their debut in 1950. Although Double Bubble is still produced, now by Tootsie Roll Industries, unfortunately the comic strip has been discontinued.
