Drinking in the Alley Leads to a Case of Mistaken Identity

Endless Summer

Cold Break Brewing Co.

5.1% Alcohol

Out on a Saturday evening, March break bowling with the brood. When it comes to bowling the only time I am going to break 100 is on the highway going home, but the alley is licensed so things are looking up, and they have an interesting draft selection which I am looking up, and down. But can I order a beer with the Department of Morality and the grandkids in tow? My son saves the day by saying this round is on him, that’s one reason he’s my favourite son.*

Drinking in the alley, linin’ ‘em up, knockin’  ‘em down. Livin’ in the fast lane and havin’ a ball with no time to spare.**

Top of the menu is a local special, a Cold Break Endless Summer IPA. I’ve had and enjoyed a Cold Break Hazy IPA before so I was looking forward to this Beach Boys’ best of brew.*** Perhaps a bit of a summertime and the livin’ is easy IPA?

A bright yellow sunlike pour, a touch of white to reflect the light. It smells… odd. Funky? It tastes very fizzy, mild stone fruit with no hops but some zing and tart.  A Fresca like major fizz factor, minimal flavour. Not like any IPA I have sampled.

Time to consult my phone, which is so intelligent it’s called a smart phone. The Cold Break website tells us that Endless Summer is a Sour with Peaches! Not an IPA, I’ll be damned. Hornswoggled by the bowling alley draft menu. That explains a few things. Like the tart zipless finish and all that fizz. So now I am reviewing a sour.  Let’s see, mild light fruit lots of fizz, very mild tart finish. Mainly fizz. As it warmed a bit it got a little fruit funky which was not endearing, so best to keep this one as cold as Chilly Willy’s ….wing. What did you think I was going to say?

A strange IPA which turned out not to be. Instead a middle of the road sour which is not sour really, mild everything except the fizz.

*Editor’s Comment: Perhaps another reason is that he’s your only son.

**Editor’s Comment: Your similes aren't bowling anyone over.

***Editor’s Comment: "Endless Summer" is a 1974 compilation album by The Beach Boys, a collection of their hits from the 1962 to 1965 period.
