When I first looked at the label on this brew my brain read Country Style, but I doubled checked and sure enough it is County Style. Is it a typo or a shout out to Picton’s Prince Edward County? Another thing about the label while we are on the subject. In Canada it is mandatory to label a beer as “Strong Beer” for an ABV of 5.6% to 8.5%. No warning on this 6.5% offering from Barley Days. Don’t worry, if I enjoy this brew I won’t be reporting you to the authorities.
Whenever I think of Picton (as in when I am drinking a beer that is brewed there) I think of the sandbanks, not ploughs and stables and rolling fields of corn, asparagus and tomatoes. And when I think of the sandbanks I think of beer. How’s that for a great segue.*
County Style is also old style, with a 355ml can rather than a tall boy. A gold slightly hazy pour with a full white sandbank head and lots of bubbles. A nice fresh aroma, the malt is hinted at but never fully divulged. An easy drinking pils with a nice light grain malt flavour, certainly carbonated, but the bubbles didn’t detract from the taste. A clean finish with a bit of malt, very nice. Not hoppy or sharp. Smooth and so easy drinking I was surprised to see a 6.5% on the label. Very good pilsner.
