And I ask you, friend, what’s a fella to do, Cause her hair was black and her eyes were blue,
And I knew right then I’d be takin’ a whirl, Round the Salthill Prom with a Galway girl.*
Ah yes, old Steve Earle was quite taken with a Galway girl. I was 8 or 9 years old and there was a dark haired blue eyed Irish slip of a thing in our class and I was smitten. Unfortunately, the feeling wasn’t mutual. If she only knew back then of my future as a successful beer reviewer maybe things would have been different. Unrequited puppy love. Now this review is going to the dogs. Time to snap out of it and pop a top and get to work.
Galway is an Irish western port city with a rich and storied past. Cold Break has a picture of Dunguaire castle on the can. Legend has it that if a person stands at the front castle gate and asks a question, they will have an answer to their question by the end of the day.**

Question: Will the Leafs win the cup?
Another Irish red graces my chilled glass. It’s a copper red, a shiny penny for your thoughts. An off-white cloud of a head rolling in over the coast, and my toast. Aroma, yes it does, thanks for asking. A malt barley roast with a bit of ale hops on the nose. Taste, yes it has that too, we are inquisitive today. First taste is a full roasted malt, good solid flavour, with a malt bitter finish not quite harsh but not far off. A nice light mouthfeel. As I work my way down the glass one of us is mellowing out, me or the brew, or the two? Who knew? Did you? *** The rough finish is a zing of the past, it’s a smooth red with a mild ale bitter backdrop.
A good solid tasty Irish Red knocking on the door of super suds stardom. Well worth a trip down the long walk to the Salthill Promenade.
“I’ve traveled around I’ve been all over this world, Boys I ain’t never seen nothin’ like a Galway girl.”*
