Alligator Woodchuck

Gateway City Brewery

4.8% Alcohol

What is a hybrid human/alligator doing log rolling (perhaps he is a logger/ lager) on a Northern Ontario Lake? Where does the woodchuck come in? Is he off somewhere chucking wood or did the alligator eat him? What the hell is a triticale? I think need a PhD in beerology‎ to figure this beer out. Unfortunately, us cranky old men went to the school of hard knocks when it comes to beer, so these unique ingredients and novel brewing techniques are beyond our comprehension. But I am sure our egghead editor will have a comment on this.*

I was busy cheering on the Blue Jays and I figured an amber would be a good viewing companion with my chips and dip and Canada’s favourite ball team since 2005.**  Nice golden pour, not as dark as most ambers. Great flavour, refreshing, easy drinking, not watery like some wannabe ambers. I really enjoyed this brew. A bit of bitter that faded but did not leave. And a hint of a unique taste that I couldn’t put my finger on, must be the rolled triticale? Who knows, who cares, it all combines for a great tasting amber. Another tasty offering from Gateway.

*Editor’s Comment: Triticale is a hybrid of wheat and rye. It is grown mostly for forage or fodder. The world leader of triticale production is Poland. There is a fascinating article on this subject by Monika Cioch-Skoneczny, Marek Zdaniewicz, Aneta Pater & Szymon Skoneczny of the Department of Fermentation Technology and Technical Microbiology, University of Agriculture in Krakow, Kraków, Poland entitled “ Impact of triticale malt application on physiochemical composition and profile of volatile compounds in beer.” And I think the egghead comment was totally unwarranted.

**Reviewer’s Comment: 2004 was the last year the Montreal Expos played.
