George and Joe Order No Bourbon, No Scotch and One Great Beer

It was 1977 and the only music you could buy back then was vinyl. I used to love “discovering’ a new artist and usually looked for a cool sounding name, hoping for some cool sounding tunes. I couldn’t resist a new album by a group called George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers * with a picture on the album cover of George doing some serious axe shredding. Turned out to be a good find.

These days if you want to check out a band you don’t have to buy an album, you just have to Google them. But when it comes to new beers or brewers, some serious suds sampling is required to know what you’re getting in to. This sluggish and somewhat suspect segue is meant to introduce a new brewer on COMDB. Northern Maverick, in core of the Little Apple, has been around for a few years but was a new brewer to me. But just like ol’ George, I was very happy to discover them.

The tender of the bar was on his game, producing a pour to adore. A wake me up coffee aroma, a java and joe jolt. First taste is some creamy dreamy porter sweet cocoa with a bit of an extra coffee kick, very tasty. “No corn or rice was harmed in the brewing of this beer “ they tell us, so no issues with the SPCG.** This brew was consistent from first sip to my fond farewell quaff. Great balance with great flavour, just a bit more coffee than a typical porter, and the subtleness works very well. And with the nitro creamy mouthfeel , it makes for one super suds porter.

I love some George Thorogood on the turntable every now and then, but I would hold the bourbon and the scotch and just go for one beer, if that beer was a NM Joe. We have had some high-flying porters in our day and this is flying as high as any. I’m not an easy 18.

An upscale sports bar atmosphere with great service, knowledgeable and accommodating staff, and some damn tasty vittles and suds.  If you’re in Toronto they’re well worth a visit.

That’s some good beer they got there.

*Editor’s Comment: George Lawrence Thorogood’s 1977 debut album on Rounder Records was entitled “George Thorogood and the Destroyers”. The 2015 remix was “George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers”. The album had his classic cover of the song “One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer”. This year just before his 75th birthday he launched his Baddest Show on Earth Tour.
