Guess what’s at the corner of Highway 35 and Highway 118. If you were to say a traffic light you would be correct but the answer I was looking for was Boshkung* Brewery, nestled in the hills of Minden. The micro-brewer says they are focused on lakeside brews and cottage living. Tonight I am at the cottage but this will be a fireside rather than a lakeside tasting.
A clear golden pour, very clear with next to no head. No carbonation either, not a bubble to be seen. A grainy, malty aroma, interesting, different, not what I expected. A bit of citrus/floral hops but minimal. The taste was predominantly grain malt, with a bit of hoppiness in the far background. Smooth, not hoppy, not bitter. I wouldn’t call it complex, just a bit different, but well balanced. It all worked. Not the taste I expected from a Cream Ale but it was a good full flavoured malt ale. I could really see a pail of ice and a few of these as a great alternative to an IPA on the dock on a hot summer day. It also worked next to the fire.
