Great Scott!

Scottsdale Blonde

Huss Brewing Co.

In Scottsdale and quaffing a great Scott at Top Golf.  Living the life of Riley, a return to our salad days. For those of you not familiar with Top Golf you’re missing out on the greatest innovation to golf since the drink cart. Someone has actually figured out how to make golf fun! Hard to believe I know but consider the following.

Real golf has you walking for about 4 miles not including hikes in the woods hunting for your balls. Top Golf is a casual stroll from the parking lot to your table, and then the bar and back a couple of times. Real golf has you hacking and slashing and hitting the ball 120 times or more. Top Golf 20 strokes and your done. In real golf if there is water or woods in the vicinity you lose a ball a hole on average. In Top Golf no hunting in the woods or fishing for an errant drive. Raining, in real golf you get soaked to the skin. Top Golf has a roof over your head.

But wait, there’s more. Real golf can be thirsty work and a long wait for the beer cart with a selection of a couple different brands of Ultra. Top Golf was 20 paces to the bar with 8 beers on tap and a selection of 20 more in the can, provided with a chilled glass.  If you are a bit peckish on the course you can get a bag of doritos from the cart if they make it by before starvation sets in. Top Golf has a complete menu including chocolate injected timbits with a hypodermic to inject the chocolate yourself! And an eager server serving up great service.

I always like to sample a local beer, and nothing sounded more local than a Scottsdale Blonde by Tempe based Huss Brewing. Not actually a blonde ale, but a Kölsch style brew, or maybe a Kölsch style blonde ale.  . Should they be using an umulat or no umulat? The debate rages on.* The more relevant question at hand is will this Scottsdale Blonde be a great shot, or just another ball in the woods.

A light golden clear pour, a bubble or two but only a few in this brew. A sand trap white head, a colour which I’m all too familiar with. A mild malt ale aroma, not intriguing but certainly inviting.  The first taste is a fresh crisp malt bread with a hint of apple fruit and a nice crisp finish. An ever so slight bitter end to a smooth stroke. Fruit fades and a very easy drinking blonde ale emerges and stays the course, which is more than I do usually when it comes to golf.

Top Golf and a great Scott make for a winning combination.

*Editor’s Comment: Traditional Kölsch are typically golden ales. The term Kölsch has had a protected geographical indication within the EU, any beer with that name is supposed to be brewed within 50kms of Cologne, Germany. Leaving out the umulat, or referring to it as a Kölsch style seems to be a few if the many ways to honor the origins and still not violate the rule.
