According to the info on the can, Tobermory Brewery is located in the center of the quaint village of Tobermory, facing the docks of Little Tub Harbour. Get to know the neighbourly feel of a small village they say. Sounds charming, makes me want to drop by and make a day of it. Also on the can, in small print at the bottom of the back of the can it says, and I quote “Brewed in London Ontario.” Last time I looked (which was just now) London Ontario is 295 kilometers away from Little Tub Harbour. Almost far enough away to call this beer an import if you are quaffing it Shipwreck Lee’s or some other fine Tobermory drinking establishment. But I digress.
This brew pours dark and thin, with a thin tannish head that made a cameo appearance, there and gone. It has a nice strong porter aroma, no question as to what type of brew this one is. First swig presented a full flavoured porter, roasted style, a strong porter lovers style flavour. But there was a very noticeable fizz in the finish, distracting and detracting from what could be a smooth operator. Will the fizz fade and fold or hang tough? Unfortunately it was the later. Fathom Five’s full flavour was foiled by a fizzy finish**. A strong full flavoured porter, an old school porter, just not a smooth finish. What was the last thing I tasted as I finished my Fathom Five? That’s right, fizz.
