High Times in the Haliburton Highlands

Cali Common

Haliburton Highlands

5.3% Alcohol

Off the beaten track on the road less travelled and with a wandering mind, but not lost or at a loss for words. I’m on a search and find expedition for the Haliburton Highlands. Not exactly Denver high or Kilimanjaro high,* but I guess high is a relative term. I should check with Fonger on that, since when he was living in Denver I am sure he had more than a few mile highs.

Tiny Tim is a member of the Ukulele Hall of Fame.

The Haliburton Highlanders didn’t pipe me in, thank goodness. But Don Ho and Tiny Tim fans can rejoice because apparently, they have the largest ukelele collection in Canada! Of course I wasn’t there to tiptoe through the tulips,** I was there to tip a brew through my two lips. From their tap selection I selected a Cali Common.

Couple that Cali Common with a Grownup Grilled Cheese that was almost as cheesy as our Editor’s jokes and we’re talkin’ about one filling and fulfilling comfort food feed.***

A nice clear amber pour with a creamy off-white head. a top notch tap. A traditional malt caramel aroma but with some hops in there too. The first taste is the malt, the caramel, and ale like bitters all coming together and leaving a roasted malt caramel aftertaste. It’s got a creamy mouthfeel but with the bitters in there I wouldn’t call it smooth. Almost nitro creamy, and it sure is tasty. Lots of flavour. The creaminess lends itself to big swigs.

There’s nothing common about this Haliburton high times brew, it’s a great beer.

*Editor’s Comment: The elevation of the Haliburton highlands ranges from 325m above sea level to 440m above sea level. Denver’s nickname is apropos as it is actually 1 mile (5,280 feet or 1609 m) above sea level. Kilimanjaro is 5,895m above sea level. In case you were wondering, the Scottish Highlands are 1345 m above sea level.

**Editor’s Comment: The 1929 song “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” was written by Al Dubin and Joe Burke. Nick Lucas had a number one hit with it that year. Tiny Tim recorded it in 1968 and it was introduced to the public that year with a ukulele strumming performance on Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In. In addition to Don Ho, Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift and Elvis Presley are among many music royalty that love their uke.

***Editor’s Comment: If they served you the “grownup” version you must have qualified for it based on age rather than level of maturity.
